In midst of the global environmental issues, we believe taking initiative on what we can do locally, around our personal surroundings is the step towards solving the global issue. The hand-made eco-bag, Decorated Eco-Bag (DECOB) will be shown to international audiences in effort to raise awareness of environmental issues and call to take initiatives

Artist from around the world have been invited to participate in this exhibition by using these bags as a canvas to express their thoughts about the subject.

About the show:

During the psychedelic 60’s, rock posters reflected the sound and vibe of that generation. The artists and their rock posters gained as huge a following as the bands that were on the posters. Screen printing studios were very common and at the time quite accessible.

In the 70’s and later the 80’s hand printed poster was challenged by the emerging computers and photocopiers that made duplicates quick and cheap. Yet, even with today’s super precision software and printers, we see a resurgence of contemporary artists using hand printed silkscreen techniques. In particular we see this growth in the Rock/abilly scene.

In the “Good the Bad and the Ugly” Keep Six Contemporary will feature three top artists who play a significant role in the creation of the artwork and also in bringing back the hand printed silkscreen process.

In this exhibition we will feature the limited edition posters created by artists Stacey Case, Louise Durand and Adam Swinbourne for musicians such as the Tijuana Bibles, Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Sonic Youth, Queens of the Stone Age, Arcade Fire and many more.

About the artists:

Stacey Case: Screen printer to the stars, filmmaker, musician (Tijuana Bibles), artist…this only begins to describe the one-man enterprise also known as Stacey Case. His current project under Studio Lucha is the now world renowned Pillow Fight League!

Louise Durand: Musician and artist Durand has worked with Broken Social Scene, Queens of the Stone Age, Arcade Fire and many more.

Adam Swinbourne: Adam over many years has worked with the following people. There are to many to mention. Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Frank Black, Rancid, Sonic Youth and many many more.

Keep Six Contemporary Gallery will be holding a 7″ record fundraiser featuring Toronto bands Nifty and Tradition. Performing that night will be Tradition, Nifty and Broken Treefort while fleshing out the night will be DJ Daniel Vila.

Nifty - www.myspace.com/princenifty - Nifty is Matt Smith (Les Mouches) who has recently released an album on Blocks Recording Club titled “A Sparrow! A Sparrow!”. It is a collection of 7 songs in as many different genres. “Two Figures” is reminiscent of a Tom Waitsian-sonic junkyard while many of the other tracks take off from pop starts into rhythm and drone rhumbas not unlike Arthur Russell or Cluster.

Tradition - www.myspace.com/tradition - James Klassen is the spirit and force behind the curiously timeless Toronto act known as Tradition. The bedraggled and lucid conscience of the animal kingdom, Tradition performs songs that are equal parts poetic, complex, sad, wild and full of joy. He currently has an album out on Blocks Recording Club and will release a new album + tour soon.

Eye-popping popsicle colours, Italian cinema beauty and a very new take on classic modernist typography.

Starting with the premise that typefaces are as expressive as the words they form, typotherapy has created a series of posters that explore the relationship between positive and negative space. “Letters speak,” says typotherapy+design creative director Noël Nanton. “If you remove them from the constraints of sentences and even words, they have a language of their own.”

‘MyType’ uses the craft of typography to find new ways of speaking using fonts famous and unknown including Helvetica, Avant Garde and typotherapy creations like Tomeri and VW Mobile.

About the exhibit:

Nick van Woert, is a 2007 graduate of Parsons MFA program and winner of the 2007 International Sculpture Center Student Award, creates sculptures that, like his impression of culture, result from “the pressure to produce, acquire and abandon consumable goods and information.” Shawn Kuruneru is a Montreal-based artist whose pen-on-paper drawings and collages combine elements of portraiture and landscape. Both artists are currently living in Brooklyn NY.

Nick and Shawn’s works both engage with contemporary culture while their processes suggest that surprise and beauty can emerge from a million repetitive movements. Nick’s sculptures begin with mass-produced pop culture in the form of plastic figurines of characters such as the Tin Man and Dorothy. These form the structured, symbolically-laden core of what will become an organic shape of vibrant colour. By dipping the figurines repeatedly into a bucket of paint, they emerge from the process looking like stalagmites, with their original form suggested by a pair of intact feet. While Nick starts out with a product that has been carefully planned, researched and focus-group tested, he subjects them to a mechanical treatment, ultimately unpredictable, pointless and without underlying logic.

Nick’s vibrant sculptures are contrasted by Shawn’s stark black-and-white drawings of iconic personalities and scenarios that are strangely juxtaposed. Shawn’s large-scale drawings are created from meticulous, careful execution with a ballpoint pen. The thousands of penstrokes eventually combine into an ordered image conjuring up associations with nature, pop culture,
experiences.

In collaboration with Gallery Keep Six Contemporary and art magazine, COOL is calling for artists to contribute their original, hand-maid eco-bags: Decorated Eco-Bag, a.k.a “decob,” for an exhibition and a product-release project, The Nomadic “decob.”

The“decob”

project will take place from Thursday June 26th to Sunday July 6th,, 2008.

We would like for you to submit your design, online, by no later then May 16th. You can download our template here. All online submissions must be emailed to cool.decob@gmail.com

A select group of arts and design community representatives will select works on the following submission guidelines:

1: All works must be clearly related to the concept of “decob”
2: All bags must be wearable and function as a bag
3: Artists selected by the committee will be provide the bags by the organizers
4: All works must be original and produced solely for the exhibit
5: All submission are free
6: Works not selected for the exhibition will be posted on the organizers website (a non refundable fee for selected artists will cover the cost
7: All original works on display will be for sale. The artists will spilt the sale 50/50 with the organizers
8: all bags are 40hx35w cm

Deadlines for submission:
May 18 All artwork must be submitted online by no later then
May 21 artists selected will be contacted
May 23-25 selected artists will pick up bags from 2 locations (a non refundable administration fee of $20 must be paid at this point)

4-5pm: ILLUSTRATION AND BEYOND
On the panel, Anne Koyama, Clayton Hanmer, Steve Wilson

This talk will focus on the perspective from the artists and their involvement with projects that challenge the creative thought and execution, from two dimensional to three dimensional. The artists will discuss how they started in the field of illustration and the direction it is going, from magazines to galleries. Also on the panel, Anne Koyama will give her perspective as a publisher and the importance of her contributions as a publisher.

Anne Koyama is a former film producer who started a new venture working with artists in 2007

Koyama published the book TRIO MAGNUS: Equally Superior, under the moniker Koyama Press, with local artists Clayton Hanmer, Aaron Leighton and Steve Wilson.

In addition to producing commercials, documentaries and feature films, Koyama also volunteered at the Aids Committee of Toronto and served on the board of directors of Art City in St. Jamestown for the past two years.

Koyama will continue contributing her time and efforts to inspire a new generation of artists.

5-6pm: HAPPY PLASTIC: IT’S FANTASTIC!
On the panel, Steve Cober, Kristin Weckworth, Derrick Hodgson

Steve and Kristen will talk about the philosophy of Magic Pony and its significant role in supporting contemporary culture through exhibitions. In the second part of the talk we will hear their opinions regarding the start and rise of vinyl toy culture. Artist Derrick Hodgson has played a significant role in this movement. His drawings have morphed into sculptures over the years. Hodgson will talk about the beginnings, from how he started in illustration to getting his characters produced as vinyl toys.

Magic Pony was created by Steve Cober and Kristin Weckworth in 2002. It began as a small circle, importing a rare selection of designer toys from Asia and selling it to a small group of collectors.

To date the gallery has exhibited both local and international artists, including Kozyndan, Gary Taxali, Team Macho, C’est Moi Ce Soir, Sonja Ahlers, Derrick Hodgson, Space 1026, Dalek, Nathan Jurevicius, Moira Hahn, Gary Baseman and many others. www.magic-pony.com

Derrick Hodgson’s drawings are renderings of complex social spaces crowded with familiar and mutated characters. Using aspects of cartoon, graffiti and contemporary design, Hodgson’s concept has quickly advanced him to the forefront of contemporary art and character design. Hodgson has exhibited his work in Tokyo, New York, Los Angeles, Milan and Melbourne. In addition to this he is the first Canadian artist to be recognized by Sony Creative in Japan where his character illustrations are transformed into 3-D art figures and sold in gatcha-gatcha machines across Japan. This quick rise to success led Hodgson to be a key speaker at the Berlin Pictoplasma conference in 2004. www.madreal.com

Toys Are Us: A Revolution in Plastic explores the creative, sophisticated, and oftentimes challenging world of designer vinyl toys through the eyes of the designers and collectors who help create it. The film features interviews with such artists as Frank Kozik, Patrick Ma (Rocketworld, IWG), Tara McPherson, Kano (Moneygrip), Erick Scarecrow (ESC Toy, Liberty), Mark Nagata (Max Toy Co., Captain Maxx), Brian Flynn (Super 7), Mars-1, Jermaine Rogers, J Neth and more, as well as collectors and fans. The DVD also includes additional interview footage with Mars-1, Patrick Ma, Brian Flynn, and Frank Kozik—who also takes viewers on a tour of his personal toy collection! High energy and fast paced, Toys Are Us is a celebration of new forms of artistic expression, DIY culture, and, of course, toys!

Toys Are Us was filmed on location at the artists’ and collectors’ homes and studios, various toy stores, and Comic Con International 2006, and features a soundtrack with music by Mindless Self Indulgence, Longway, Brian McCarty, Stick Shift, and I, Synthesist.
